Umbwe Route
One of Kilimanjaro’s most challenging routes, featuring a steep ascent and spectacular mountain scenery for experienced trekkers
The Umbwe Route is one of the most challenging and direct ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its steep trails and dramatic mountain scenery. Starting on the southern side of the mountain, the route ascends quickly through lush rainforest before joining the Southern Circuit at Barranco. From here, trekkers continue through the alpine landscape towards Karanga and Barafu Camps before making the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Due to its steep and demanding nature, the Umbwe Route is best suited to experienced trekkers who are comfortable with challenging terrain and a faster ascent.
Why choose the Umbwe route?
A Direct Ascent
Umbwe takes a more direct line up Kilimanjaro, making it one of the shortest and steepest approaches to the mountain.
Dramatic Mountain Terrain
Experience a striking transition from dense rainforest to rugged valleys, alpine landscapes and high-altitude terrain as you climb.
For Experienced Trekkers
With steep sections and a demanding ascent, Umbwe is ideal for experienced hikers looking for a more challenging Kilimanjaro adventure.

Frequently asked questions
How difficult is the Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route is considered moderate, with the main challenge being the altitude rather than technical climbing. The route gradually ascends from the northern side of Kilimanjaro through forest and open moorland, with the final summit night being the most demanding section. A good level of fitness, a steady pace and proper acclimatisation will help you enjoy the trek and give you the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Is the Rongai Route suitable for beginners?
Yes. The Rogai Route can be a good choice for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. Its gradual ascent and lack of technical climbing make it accessible to those without previous trekking experience. We recommend the 7-day itinerary for first-time trekkers, as the additional acclimatisation day allows more time to adjust to the altitude before the summit attempt.
What is the difference between the 6-day and 7-day Rongai Route, and which is better?
Both itineraries follow the same remote Rongai Route, but the 7-day option includes an additional acclimatisation day and overnight stay at Mawenzi Tarn. This gives your body more time to adjust to the altitude before the summit and creates a more gradual pace.
The 6-day route is a faster-paced option with less time to acclimatise, best suited to trekkers who are confident with long days and have previous high-altitude experience. For most trekkers, we recommend the 7-day route for better acclimatisation, a more comfortable pace and more time to prepare for the summit.
What is the summit success rate on the Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route has a good summit success rate, particularly when completed over a longer itinerary with proper acclimatisation. The 7-day route is recommended for most trekkers as the additional acclimatisation day at Mawenzi Tarn allows more time to adjust to the altitude before your summit attempt. Your fitness, preparation, pacing and how your body responds to altitude will also play an important role in reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
When is the best time to climb the Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route can be climbed throughout the year, but the best times are generally January to March and June to October, when the weather is typically drier and more settled. Rongai’s northern approach lies in a rain shadow, making it one of the drier routes on Kilimanjaro. The route can also be a good option during the wetter months, although rain is still possible, particularly in April, May and November.
What is the scenery like on the Rongai Route?
The Rongai Route offers a diverse mountain landscape, beginning in lush montane forest before opening into wide moorland and alpine desert. As you gain altitude, you’ll enjoy views cross the northern plains, dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak and the vast Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The changing vegetation, volcanic terrain and remote northern setting make Rongai a rewarding route for those looking to experience a different side of Kilimanjaro.
Is the Rongai Route crowded?
The Rongai Route is one of the quieter routes on Mount Kilimanjaro, with fewer trekkers than the more popular Lemosho and Machame routes. The northern approach offers a more peaceful atmosphere, particularly during the early days of the trek, although you may encounter more groups as the route joins the main summit trail.
What is the accommodation like on the Rongai Route?
Accommodation on the Rongai Route is in mountain camps, where you will sleep in comfortable, high-quality tents provided by our mountain crew. Your tent will be set up for you at each campsite, allowing you to focus on resting and enjoying the experience. You will have nourishing meals prepared by your dedicated mountain chef to help keep you fuelled throughout the trek.
How fit do I need to be for the Rongai Route?
A good level of fitness will help you get the most from the Roungai Route, although no previous trekking or climbing experience is required. The main challenges are the altitude and demanding summit day rather than technical climbing. Regular walking, hiking and cardiovascular exercise will help you prepare, while the 7-day itinerary allows a more gradual ascent and additional time to acclimatise.
What happens if I become unwell or cannot continue?
Your safety and wellbeing are always our priority. Our professional guides will monitor you throughout the trek for signs of altitude sickness or other concerns and will assess the safest course of action if you become unwell. If you are unable to continue, your guide will assist with the descent and coordinate with the wider mountain team as needed. This is also why comprehensive travel insurance with appropriate mountain rescue cover is essential.
