What makes Tarangire special?
Tarangire National Park is one of northern Tanzania’s most distinctive safari destinations, known for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and the river that gives the park its name. During the dry season, wildlife gathers around the Tarangire River and permanent water sources, creating exceptional opportunities for game viewing.
Why visit Tarangire?
The elephants
Tarangire is particularly renowned for its elephant population, with large family groups frequently seen moving through the park.
Ancient Baobabs
Towering baobabs create one of Tarangire’s most recognisable landscapes, standing among the grassland and acacia woodland.
The Tarangire River
The river is the parks lifeline, providing a vital source of water that attracts wildlife, particularly during the dry season.
Birdlife
Tarangire is home to more than 500 bird species, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching throughout the year.
The Tarangire River
The lifeline of Tarangire
The Tarangire River is at the heart of the park’s ecosystem, providing a vital source of water for wildlife. During the dry season, as water becomes scarce across the surrounding landscape, animals gather around the river and remaining water sources.
Wildlife in Tarangire
Tarangire supports an impressive variety of wildlife, from its famous elephants to giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, impala and eland. Lions and leopards can also be seen, while the park’s varied habitats support an exceptional diversity of birdlife.

When is the best time to visit?
June-October
The dry season is widely considered one of the best times to visit Tarangire, as wildlife becomes increasingly concentrated around the Tarangire River and other sources of water.
Tarangire can also be visited outside the dry season. During the wetter months, wildlife disperses across the surrounding landscape and the park becomes greener, with fewer visitors and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
TANAPA currently describes June-October as the dry season, with short rains in November-December and long rains from March-May.
