Frequently asked questions
How difficult is the Northern Circuit Route?
The Northern Circuit Route is considered a moderate trekking route. Its longer 9-day itinerary allows for a gradual ascent, giving your body more time to adjust to the increasing altitude. While the route does not require any technical climbing skills, you should be prepared for several days of trekking, high-altitude conditions and a demanding summit night. A good level of fitness and preparation will help you get the most from your experience.
Is the Northern Circuit Route suitable for beginners?
Yes. The Northern Circuit can be suitable for beginners who have a good level of fitness and are prepared for a longer trek. Its 9-day itinerary provides a gradual ascent and plenty of time for your body to adjust to the increasing altitude, making it a good option for first-time Kilimanjaro trekkers. However, the route is still physically demanding, particularly during the summit attempt, so good preparation and training are important.
What is the summit success rate on the Northern Circuit Route?
The Northern Circuit has one of the highest summit success rates on Mount Kilimanjaro, with approximately 95% of trekkers reaching Uhuru Peak on the 9-day itinerary. It’s longer, gradual ascent allows more time for your body to adjust to the increasing altitude, helping improve your chances of reaching the summit. However, altitude affects everyone differently, so reaching Uhuru Peak can never be guaranteed.
What is the weather like on the Northern Circuit Route?
The weather on Kilimanjaro can vary considerably as you gain altitude, with conditions changing from warm and humid rainforest to cool moorland and eventually cold, dry alpine conditions. The Northern Circuit follows the drier northern slopes, which generally receive less rainfall than the southern side of the mountain.
Temperatures become increasingly colder as you climb, with the summit capable of reaching below freezing, particularly during the overnight summit attempt. Although the Northern Circuit is generally drier, rain and changing weather conditions are possible at any time, so you should be prepared for a range of conditions throughout your trek.
What is the scenery like on the Northern Circuit Route?
The Northern Circuit offers a diverse range of landscapes as you journey through the quieter northern side of Kilimanjaro. The trail begins in lush rainforest, before opening into moorland, high-altitude desert and rugged volcanic landscapes. Along the way, you’ll enjoy impressive views of Kibo and Mawnezi Peaks, as well as the vast plains of Northern Tanzania and, on clear days, views towards Kenya. The route also offers a unique perspective of Kilimanjaro as you circle the mountain before making your final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Is the Northern Circuit Route crowded?
The Northern Circuit is generally one of the quietest routes on Kilimanjaro, particularly compared with popular routes such as Lemosho and Machame. It’s longer itinerary takes you around the less-travelled northern slopes, where you can enjoy a more peaceful trekking experience and fewer people on the trail. However, you may still encounter other groups, particularly during busier climbing seasons and as the route approaches the summit.
What is the accommodation like on the Northern Circuit Route?
Accommodation on the Northern Circuit is in mountain camps, where you will sleep in comfortable, high-quality tents provided by our mountain crew. Your tent will be set up for you at each campsite, allowing you to focus on resting and enjoying the experience. You will have nourishing meals prepared by your dedicated mountain chef to help keep you fuelled throughout the trek.
How fit do I need to be for the Northern Circuit Route?
You should have a good level of fitness to take on the Northern Circuit. The route involves several consecutive days of trekking, with some long days and a demanding summit night. However, the 9-day itinerary allows for a gradual pace and plenty of time to acclimatise, making it manageable for people who prepare properly. Regular walking, hiking and cardiovascular exercise in the months before your trek will help you build the endurance needed to enjoy the journey.
What happens if I become unwell or cannot continue?
Your safety and wellbeing are always our priority. Our professional guides will monitor you throughout the trek for signs of altitude sickness or other concerns and will assess the safest course of action if you become unwell. If you are unable to continue, your guide will assist with the descent and coordinate with the wider mountain team as needed. This is also why comprehensive travel insurance with appropriate mountain rescue cover is essential.
