Umbwe Route
One of Kilimanjaro’s most challenging routes, featuring a steep ascent and spectacular mountain scenery for experienced trekkers
The Umbwe Route is one of the most challenging and direct ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its steep trails and dramatic mountain scenery. Starting on the southern side of the mountain, the route ascends quickly through lush rainforest before joining the Southern Circuit at Barranco. From here, trekkers continue through the alpine landscape towards Karanga and Barafu Camps before making the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Due to its steep and demanding nature, the Umbwe Route is best suited to experienced trekkers who are comfortable with challenging terrain and a faster ascent.
Why choose the Umbwe route?
A Direct Ascent
Umbwe takes a more direct line up Kilimanjaro, making it one of the shortest and steepest approaches to the mountain.
Dramatic Mountain Terrain
Experience a striking transition from dense rainforest to rugged valleys, alpine landscapes and high-altitude terrain as you climb.
For Experienced Trekkers
With steep sections and a demanding ascent, Umbwe is ideal for experienced hikers looking for a more challenging Kilimanjaro adventure.

Once at the summit of the wall, you will be rewarded with impressive views across the mountain.

As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly rocky and barren, marking your transition into Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert zone. You will arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon, where you will enjoy lunch and have time to rest and prepare for your midnight summit attempt. After an early dinner, we will gather you for a pre-summit briefing before preparing your gear for the night, before retiring to your tent for a few hours sleep.

The summit climb begins in darkness, ascending steep scree towards Stella Point (5,756m). Continuing with a slow and steady pace, you will follow the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. While the trek itself is fairly simple, the high altitude makes even regular physical exercise feel strenuous. Frequently asked questions
How difficult is the Umbwe Route?
The Umbwe Route is considered one of the most challenging routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail is steep, rugged and clips quickly, particularly during the first two days through the rainforest and heathland. The rapid ascent also gives your body less time to acclimatise to the increasing altitude.
The Umbwe Route is best suited to experienced hikers with a good level of fitness and previous experience with long, steep mountain trails. The 5-day itinerary is particularly demanding, while the 6-day option includes an additional acclimatisation day, with an overnight stay at Karanga Camp, allowing more time to adjust to the altitude.
Once the trail reaches Barranco Camp, it joins the Southern Circuit and follows the same trail towards Karanga, Barafu and the summit as several other southern routes.
Is the Umbwe Route suitable for beginners?
The Umbwe Route is not recommended for beginners or first-time high-altitude trekkers. It is one of Kilimanjaro’s steepest and most demanding routes, with a rapid ascent during the first two days and limited time to acclimatise. The route is better suited to experienced hikers who are physically fit, comfortable with steep and rugged terrain, and have previous experience trekking at altitude. If you are new to high-altitude trekking, a longer route with a more gradual ascent, such as Lemosho or the Northern Circuit may be more suitable.
What is the difference between the 5-day and 6-day Umbwe Route, and which is better?
The main difference between the 5-day and 6-day Umbwe Route is the pace of the trek. Both follow the same steep and demanding approach to Barranco Camp before continuing along the Southern Circuit towards the summit.
The 5-day itinerary is the faster and more demanding option, with very little time for acclimatisation. It involves a rapid ascent and is generally recommended only for highly experienced trekkers who are comfortable with steep terrain and high-altitude trekking.
The 6-day itinerary spreads the climb over an additional day, giving you a little more time on the mountain and a less compressed schedule. However, it remains a very demanding route, with rapid altitude gain during the first two days.
For trekkers choosing between the two, the 6-day itinerary provides a more gradual schedule than the5-day option, while still offering the challenging and direct experience that makes the Umbwe Route distinctive.
What is the summit success rate on the Umbwe Route?
The Umbwe Route has a relatively low summit success rate compared with longer Kilimanjaro routes. Its steep terrain and rapid ascent gives trekkers less time to acclimatise to the increasing altitude, particularly on the shorter itineraries. The 5-day itinerary route is especially demanding, while the 6-day option allows an additional day for acclimatisation. Good physical preparation, a steady pace and listening to your mountain guide are important when attempting the summit via Umbwe.
When is the best time to climb the Umbwe Route?
The best time to climb the Umbwe Route is during Kilimanjaro’s drier months, from January to March and June to October. These periods generally offer better trail conditions, clearer views and more stable weather. The dry conditions are particularly beneficial on the Umbwe Route because of its steep and rugged terrain. The long rains in April and May can make the trail wet and slippery, making an already demanding route even more challenging. November also brings a shorter rainy season, although the mountain can still be climbed during this period.
What is the weather like on the Umbwe Route?
The weather on the Umbwe Route changes significantly as you gain altitude. The lower section passes through humid, often misty rainforest, where rain is possible even during the drier months. As you climb into the health and moorland, conditions become cooler and more exposed, with temperatures dropping further at higher elevations. The summit area can be very cold and windy, with temperatures below freezing, particularly during the early-morning summit climb. Umbwe is on the southern side of Kilimanjaro, which generally receives more rainfall than the northern slopes, so trekkers should be prepared for changing weather and wet conditions, particularly during the rainy seasons.
Is the Umbwe Route crowded?
The Umbwe Route is one of the quieter routes on Kilimanjaro, particularly during the first two days. Its steep and demanding nature means it attracts fewer trekkers than some of the more popualra routes, allowing for a more peaceful experience through the forest and along the Umbwe Ridge. From Barranco Camp, the route joins the Southern Circuit and becomes busier as it shares the trail with trekkers from the Machame and Lemoso routes. Crowds can also increase around the summit as several routes converge for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.
What is the accommodation like on the Umbwe Route?
Accommodation on the Umbwe Route is in mountain camps, where you will sleep in comfortable, high-quality tents provided by our mountain crew. Your tent will be set up for you at each campsite, allowing you to focus on resting and enjoying the experience. You will have nourishing meals prepared by your dedicated mountain chef to help keep you fuelled throughout the trek.
How fit do I need to be for the Umbwe Route?
The Umbwe Route requires a high level of fitness and endurance. The first two days are particularly demanding, with steep and rugged terrain and rapid altitude gain. You should be comfortable with long days of uphill hiking and uneven mountain terrain. Previous trekking or high-altitude experience is strongly recommended. Good fitness is important, but it cannot replace acclimatisation, so being prepared for the effects of altitude is equally important. The 5-day itinerary is especially demanding due its faster pace, while the 6-day option allows more time to adjust to the altitude.
What happens if I become unwell or cannot continue?
Your safety and wellbeing are always our priority. Our professional guides will monitor you throughout the trek for signs of altitude sickness or other concerns and will assess the safest course of action if you become unwell. If you are unable to continue, your guide will assist with the descent and coordinate with the wider mountain team as needed. This is also why comprehensive travel insurance with appropriate mountain rescue cover is essential.
